US$36 million construction contract for Ambatovy Project

Bateman Engineering has been awarded a contract for the construction of the sulphuric acid facilities at the Ambatovy nickel project in Madagascar. The US$36 million Fixed Price Lump Sum contract covers the erection and commissioning up to handover to the client for hot commissioning of two 2,750 t/day sulphur burning acid plants.

Processing plant for Andalucita: S.A.

Bateman Engineering is nearing completion of a ZAR26 (US$3.5) million lumpsum turnkey project to establish a greenfields andalusite processing plant for Andalucita: S.A. at their site near Paita in Lima, Peru. The plant, a 40 t/h dense media separation plant (DMS) and associated equipment, has been pre-erected and factory tested before being transported to site where it is now being installed.

Sulphuric acid production plant for Ambatovy Nickel

Bateman Engineering has been awarded an EP contract by Dynatec Madagascar SA (DMSA) worth approximately US$100 million to provide a 5,500 t/day sulphur-burning sulphuric acid facility for the utilities section of the Ambatovy Nickel project.

Reagent-plant upgrade for Impala Platinum

Bateman Engineering has upgraded the depressant-dosing circuit in the reagent plant at Impala Platinum Ltd’s platinum concentrator near Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.

Detail design of Rhino Minerals’ andalusite plant

Bateman Engineering has provided Rhino Minerals (Pty) Ltd with a complete engineering and design package for a greenfields crushing and washing plant at its Segorong andalusite-processing facility near Penge in the Limpopo Province, RSA.

New lining technology upgrades the flash furnace at Olympic Dam

Bateman Engineering has successfully upgraded the copper flash smelter at BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam operation, where mining, smelting and refining produces 200,000 t of copper annually, with by-products such as uranium, gold and silver. The furnace produces blister copper from a feed of copper concentrate.

Rebuilt MCC at Rhino Minerals’ Thabazimbi andalusite plant

Bateman Engineering has rebuilt the motor-control centre (MCC) at Rhino Minerals (Pty) Ltd’s andalusite-processing plant at Thabazimbi in the west of the Limpopo province, RSA. This is the largest producer of andalusite in the country. Rhino Minerals is part of Imerys South Africa (Pty) Ltd, a local subsidiary of the Imerys Group of France.

New furnace feed system for Tubatse Ferrochrome

Bateman Engineering has upgraded the furnace feed system at Billiton's Tubatse Ferrochrome plant in Steelpoort, Mpumalanga, RSA. The previous feed system comprised a number of conveyors feeding through the furnace roof directly into the furnace, while the new feed system consists of a conveyor feeding raw material to a new storage bin at a rate of 150 t/h.

Dust-collection system installed at Rand Refinery

Bateman Engineering has completed a R2 million lump-sum turnkey project for Rand Refinery Ltd to upgrade an existing dust-collection system by the addition of a new scrubber. The objective was to optimise the gold recovery from the particulate matter in the off-gases from the furnaces and minimise pollution of the environment.

BATEMAN awarded NORAM's sulphuric-acid technology license

Bateman Engineering N.V. (BATEMAN) has been granted a license by Noram Engineering and Constructors (NORAM of Vancouver, Canada), making it the exclusive licensee for NORAM's sulphuric-acid plant technologies in the sub-Saharan area.

Metal-recovery plant upgraded for MultiServ

BATEMAN has completed a lump-sum turnkey project for MultiServ South Africa to upgrade a plant recovering traces of stainless-steel from furnace slag at the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg, RSA. MultiServ is a division of the worldwide Harsco group.

Extracting PGMs from chromite tailings at Kroondal -
a world first

The new chromite-tailings retreatment plant for the recovery of platinum-group metals (PGMs) at Aquarius Platinum's Kroondal mine near Rustenburg, South Africa, designed, manufactured and erected by BATEMAN, is thought to be the first PGM-flotation plant in the world to process chrome-mine tailings.

Multi-skilled special-project teams

BATEMAN has launched a new business line, Bateman Special Projects, which will undertake special projects in the minerals, mining and industrial market sectors. The concept was applied successfully during the past few years in its Small Projects unit and has been expanded to cover a wider market.

Chrome tailings-treatment plant for Aquarius

Bateman Africa (Pty) Ltd's small-projects team (previously known as Tawana (Pty) Ltd) has completed the first phase of a project for the establishment of the RKI chrome tailings-treatment plant for Aquarius Platinum (Africa) Corporate Services (Pty) Ltd in Kroondal, near Rustenburg, RSA. This phase involved the design, upfront engineering and determination of the capital costs.
