BATEMAN has a long record of service to coal industries in Southern Africa and Australasia and in the past five years alone has undertaken more than 25 projects and major studies involving coal processing, handling and conveying. Some of the projects are mentioned below.

Buoyant demand for new design breaker drum

The third conversion of a rotary Bradford breaker at Khutala Colliery near Witbank, South Africa, to the new design breaker drum has been completed with installation being achieved over a weekend. The breaker was taken off line on a Friday morning and was back in production, with the new drum, on Sunday afternoon.

BATEMAN Apic jigs process coal in India

BATEMAN is actively expanding its jigging business in India and several orders for Bateman Apic coal-processing jigs have been received during the past year from that part of the world.

Gordonstone coal preparation plant upgrade

    This upgrade for Gordonstone Coal Management Pty Ltd increased the throughput of the plant at Emerald, Queensland, Australia, to 1 000 t/h. It consisted of the addition of two 5 m diameter Jameson cells and an 85 m² horizontal belt vacuum filter to Module 2 of the plant and the installation of 1 000 mm diameter dense media cyclones and banana screens for drain and rinse. The upgrade was designed to cause minimal interruption to the plant’s coal production and the installation was scheduled to coincide with planned shutdowns of the long-wall mining equipment.

Gregory fines plant upgrade

    The fine coal dewatering system of the Gregory Mine, Emerald, Queensland, Australia was upgraded for BHP Coal Pty Ltd by replacing the three existing drum filters with a single 109 m² horizontal belt vacuum filter.

Newstan coal preparation plant upgrade

BATEMAN, in joint venture with Concrete Constructions, upgraded the Newstan coal preparation plant at Lake Macquarrie, NSW, Australia, for Powercoal Pty Ltd. The overall plant capacity was increased from 450 to 700 t/h and simultaneous production of coking and thermal coal was achieved.

Saxonvale Coal project

BATEMAN, in joint venture with Concrete Constructions, completed the fast-track lump-sum upgrade of the Saxonvale plant, Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia, for Oakbridge Limited. The preparation plant was modified from a single to a two product, two module dense media separation (DMS) plant. This was the first Australian plant to use banana screens exclusively in a DMS circuit. The raw stockpile capacity was increased to 120 00 tonne and an innovative mass-flow system applied to handle the sticky clay bearing materials, the first time mass-flow reclaim was used in an Australian coal application. The mine production has increased from 4,5M to 10M t/yr .

Springvale coal preparation plant upgrade

Under an EPCM contract from Springvale Coal Services, the washing capacity of the plant at Lithgow, NSW, Australia, was increased from 100 to 300 t/h. The upgrade was executed with minimal disruption of plant production.

Stratford coal preparation plant upgrade

The upgrade of the existing Stratford coal preparation plant, Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia, was conducted for CIM Resources under a lump-sum turnkey contract. The upgrade included the installation of two Jameson flotation cells, a horizontal-belt vacuum filter and a teetered bed separator. The latter was the first installation of this type in Australia.

Portnet’s new dry bulk terminal load-out station

The new BATEMAN load-out station at the Port of Richards Bay, RSA, and an Elbram train mover were handed over to Portnet at a ceremony held in March 1999. It is one of several major capital investments by Portnet to increase the capacity and improve the services of the port’s dry bulk terminal.

Overland coal conveyor for Middelburg Mine Services

BATEMAN is executing a contract from Middelburg Mine Services, RSA, for a 14 km overland conveyor system. The contract was awarded after the adjudication of tenders from several top ranking world contenders.

BATEMAN load out stations

    Two BATEMAN load out stations for rapid bulk loading of particulate materials into moving trains were recently installed, one at Richards Bay, RSA and the other at Moranbah, Australia. They both use the flask loading system and BATEMAN’s materials flow technology was used during design to ensure blockage free operation. Email

Plant automation at Blair Athol

Bateman Kinhill has been engineering and project managing the automation of the fixed plant and the two 4,000 t/hr bucket wheel stacker / reclaimers on the Blair Athol Coal Project. The objective is to reduce the manning requirements at the plant and improve equipment availability and information gathering.

Load out station at Ashdod Coal Terminal

Since its installation eight years ago, the BATEMAN rapid load out station at the Ashdod Coal Terminal has been part of a very successful operation. The terminal’s history was recently the subject of a detailed review in Bulk Solids Handling, Vol. 17, No. 3, 1997.

Stratford Coal flotation plant

Bateman Kinhill has finished upgrading the coal preparation plant for Stratford Coal Pty Ltd. The mine, which produces coal for export, is situated about 80 km north of Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

Coal handling at Richards Bay Coal Terminal

Richards Bay Coal Terminal Co. Ltd. (RBCT) has awarded Bateman Materials Handling a contract for a gathering conveyor to handle coal at the terminal.

Springvale coal ROM modifications

The run-of-mine (ROM) coal handling and sizing facilities at Springvale Colliery, previously rated at 900 t/hr, have been upgraded by Bateman Kinhill, Sydney. The project involved the conceptual and detail design, supply, installation, site modifications and commissioning of an extension to the existing sizer building and its new and modified equipment.

Another modular coal plant for New Clydesdale colliery

The modular plant division of Bateman Minerals and Industrial has supplied another pump fed modular coal washing plant to Gold Fields of South Africa
Limited's New Clydesdale Colliery. The plant is a second stage add-on washery to the modular coal washing plant supplied to the colliery by BATEMAN last year.
