Cement silo for NPC

Work on the new multi-compartment BATEMAN Ibau silo to handle four types of cement for Natal Portland Cement, Durban, RSA, is nearing completion. This project by Bateman Materials Handling commenced as a design contract and converted into a turnkey contract in July 1997. The concrete work is now complete and the silo is on schedule to be commissioned in October 1998.

The silo holds 14 000 tonne of product, has a 20 m diameter and is 68 m high. Featuring Ibau technology, it is equipped with two mobile loaders and weigh bridges for road tanker out loading. Two bucket elevators (with a lift of 50 m and 30 m) capable of handling 200 t/h receive the cement, transfer it to the top of the silo or recycle it between the silo cells.

Approximately 500 m of air-slides are provided in the silo compartments to ensure the release of the cement. Two interconnecting gantries equipped with air-slides join the silo to the main plant. Dedusting filters are installed around the plant and a man lift and staircase are provided. Four storeys of floor space, incorporating the control room, are provided underneath the silo within the confines of its wall.

Over 4 000 m 3 of concrete, 600 tonne of rebar and 200 tonne of structural steel were required to construct the silo. BATEMAN undertook the civil engineering design and more than 600 mechanical engineering drawings and 640 electrical engineering drawings were required. BATEMAN also erected the steel work, which was manufactured in BATEMAN’s workshop in Gauteng and transported to site.
