Slag granulation and de-watering plant for RTZ, Brazil

A slag granulation and de-watering plant has been supplied to the new smelter of Minerçâ Serra Da Fortaleza Ltda near Fortaleza De Minas, Brazil. The new plant was designed, constructed and commissioned within three months by distributing the work amongst several subcontractors. Bateman IST undertook the conceptual and basic design and prepared all data sheets and drawings. Detailing was done by a Brazilian engineering company and local contractors manufactured and constructed the plant. The overall project was managed by RTZ Brazil.

The specification called for a plant with low maintenance and labour requirements which would be constructed without inhibiting existing operations and switched in with minimum delay. The tie-in was achieved during a three day shutdown. Existing granulation pumps were re-used and a cooling circuit provided.

Several novel design features were incorporated into the plant. A low maintenance static de-watering device requiring minimal operator attention was developed which obviated the need for mechanical de-watering. Economical cooling is provided by a modular evaporative cooling tower positioned in the pond which cools the water between granulation cycles to the required temperature. The granulation launder basin was constructed in precast sections to fit over the existing pump chamber and to join up with the existing granulation chamber.

The plant was cold and hot commissioned successfully within two-and-half days and is now operating to the complete satisfaction of the client.
